What is a listserv/electronic mailing list?
While regular e-mail is ideal for one-to-one communication, electronic mailing lists advance the concept a step further by disseminating a single message simultaneously to a group of people (in this case your colleagues). Technically, it's an automated system that allows the people subscribed to it to send email messages to a central address the "list" address - and the messages will be shared with everyone subscribed to the list.
It allows the Colorado Library Consortium to disseminate information to all members of CLiC with one easy email message sent to everyone on the list. No longer are time-sensitive "broadcast" emails being sent to many individuals; instead CLiC can send one message to the listserv and all subscribed can read the message.
This LISTSERV is a managed list - only approved messages from CLiC will ever be posted (No discussions!), and we intend to keep the number of postings to a minimum. Only three types of information will be posted -
- Information about our Courier that needs to be distributed ASAP
- Information about CLiC membership
- Upcoming CLiC continuing education events

Signing up, joining a list, or subscribing are all proper terms to use in discussion, but when you actually sign up, you must follow these steps:
- send an email message to: LISTSERV@LIST.COALLIANCE.ORG
- leave subject line blank
- in the body of the email type: subscribe CLIC-L [your name]
- Do NOT include any other information such as a signature.
After subscribing (send this email) you will receive an email auto-reply with more information about using the list, such as unsubscribing. SAVE IT!
You never know when you might need to refer to this file.
Why was I added to the listserv automatically?
There are two ways you could have been automatically added to the CLiC-L listserv:
- you are a designated CLiC courier contact
- you are the CLiC voting member representative

Getting off the list or unsubscribing:
- send an email message to: LISTSERV@LIST.COALLIANCE.ORG
- leave subject line blank
- in the body of the email type: signoff CLIC-L
- Do NOT include any other information such as a signature.
Sending & replying to messages on the list
You most likely will NOT be sending messsages to the listserv, but if you need to, make sure you understand how. The email address you use to POST messages is different than the one above that you use to subscribe to the listserv. To subscribe, you are sending a command to the listserv software (at LISTSERV@LIST.COALLIANCE.ORG) and to post a message you are sending the the listserv address ( CLIC-L@LIST.COALLIANCE.ORG). Make sure you understand the difference.
Sending messages to all on the listserv:
- Once subscribed, send your email messages to:
CLIC-L@LIST.COALLIANCE.ORG - Note in the subject line what your message is about. Also, note if it
relates directly to a particular type of library (academic, public,
school, special, courier). Use parenthesis and caps to denote
the library type:
Subject: (PUBLIC) what my message is about... - Type your email message and be sure to sign your name!
Changing your email with the list
Keep your address current!
You can choose to unsubscribe as mentioned above but if you do leave; you should make sure your institution's Courier representative is on the list as critical information may be distributed that your organization will need to know.
Also keep your email address current! If your email changes, please unsubsribe your old email and subscribe again with your new email address.
